About the authors

Completely updated for the new 2024 Study Design, this visually inspiring third edition focuses on the meaning of good design and how human-centred design principles can uncover and solve problems faced by people and the planet.

  • Students are guided through the new VCD design process (based on the Double Diamond model), and its emphasis on divergent and convergent design thinking, as they explore user-centred approaches to designing innovative messages, objects, environments, and interactive experiences.
  • New highly relevant case studies and interviews with designers, both emerging and established, showcase contemporary design practice and trends.
  • A mix of new and proven assessment tasks and new end-of-chapter activities cover all Study Design outcomes, provide practical applications for building folios, and help students consolidate their knowledge and understanding as they prepare for exams.
  • Practical advice and recent VCE student work supports students as they work on their major design projects, including developing a brief, exploring design concepts, and presenting their final work.
  • The Interactive Textbook brings the study of Visual Communication Design to life with auto-marked online activities, and a wide range of videos, including how-to demonstrations, and case study support.
  • The key knowledge and skills requirements of each Area of Study are outlined at the start of every chapter to support teachers’ delivery of the new Study Design.
  • Chapter tests with solutions and a practice exam with suggested responses are available in the Teacher Resource Package along with assessment guidelines for the end-of-chapter tasks.
  • Comprehensive teaching plans ensure lessons cover all the Study Design objectives and outcomes.
